Edgemont, Edmonton: Schools, Shopping, Transportation and Why Families Are Moving Here

If you are house hunting in west Edmonton, Edgemont deserves a spot on your list. This ravine community has grown quickly since it was established in 2011, and it now offers a mix of new construction, easy access to major roads and a genuine small-town feel inside a big city. Here is what you need to know about schools, shopping, transportation and everyday life in Edgemont.

Where Is Edgemont?

Edgemont sits in the west sector of Edmonton, bordered by Winterburn Road (215 Street NW) to the west, the Wedgewood Ravine to the south, Anthony Henday Drive to the east and Lessard Road and 45 Avenue NW to the north. That location puts residents close to two major roadways without living right on top of them.

 What schools serve Edgemont?

Edgemont is a growing family community, and school access has been a hot topic for residents. Here is the current picture:

Future public K-9 school: A public K-9 school for Edgemont has provincial approval and is under development by Edmonton Public Schools, located just north of the Edgemont Natural Playground. The project has faced delays due to soil stability issues discovered during site work, so the opening date is listed as "to be determined" rather than a fixed year. When complete, it is expected to accommodate up to 950 students.

Schools currently serving the area:

  • Michael A. Kostek School (public elementary, K-6)
  • S. Bruce Smith School (public junior high, K-9)
  • Archbishop Oscar Romero High School (Catholic, grades 10-12)
  • Winterburn School (public elementary, about 1.5 km from Edgemont)
  • Bessie Nichols School (public, K-9)

Because the neighbourhood school is still in progress, some Edgemont families have dealt with longer bus rides or out-of-area placements in the past. If schools are a top priority for your move, this is worth discussing directly so you understand what applies to your specific address and school year.

What shopping and amenities are near Edgemont?

Edgemont residents are not far from some of the best retail in the city:

  • West Edmonton Mall is one of the largest shopping centres in North America, with hundreds of stores, restaurants and entertainment options.
  • Currents of Windermere offers boutique shopping, restaurants and a VIP Cineplex Odeon, just minutes away.
  • Costco is a short drive from the community for grocery and household essentials.

For everyday life, Edgemont also has parks, playgrounds and green space built right in, including the Edgemont Natural Playground and the Wedgewood Creek Ravine for hiking and walking trails.

How easy is it to get around from Edgemont?

Getting around from Edgemont is straightforward:

  • Anthony Henday Drive runs along the eastern edge of the neighbourhood, giving quick access to all corners of the city.
  • Whitemud Drive is close by as well, so commuting to other parts of Edmonton is manageable.
  • ETS Route 924 serves the community and connects to West Edmonton Mall Transit Centre, where residents can transfer to routes heading downtown or to the University of Alberta.
  • The community itself is built with wide sidewalks, traffic calming and multi-use trails, making it easy to walk or bike to parks and nearby amenities.

Why Live in Edgemont?

Edgemont works well for buyers who want newer construction, ravine views and quick highway access without giving up green space and a walkable layout. You get proximity to one of the biggest shopping and entertainment destinations in the country, along with quiet residential streets designed for families. The neighbourhood is still developing, which means some amenities like the local school are on the way rather than already built. For some buyers that is a reason to wait. For others, it is a chance to get into a growing community early.
